Although Captain Morris Benson Lyman was not the first to live in the Lantana area, he is considered its founder. Lyman arrived from Canada in 1884; after his family followed in 1887, they filed a 160-acre homestead and started several businesses. Their home, built in 1889 of durable Dade County pine, still stands at 300 East Ocean Avenue as a restaurant. Lyman named the locale Lantana Point for the plant that grew in abundance, but shortened it to Lantana for the post office he established in 1892. Lantana was described in the Business Directory, Guide and History of Dade County, 1896-1897 as follows:
Although it is one of the smaller communities of Palm Beach County, Lantana is noted as one of the oldest. The first settlers came after Congress passed the Armed Occupation Act in 1842 at the end of the Seminole Wars. One of the pioneer settlers, The Lyman family, is distinguished as the founders of the town. M. B. Lyman brought his family to Lantana in 1888 and started several enterprises. He established a store, Indian Trading Post, and post office in 1889.As postmaster, Mr. Lyman named the post office as Lantana Point for the wild Lantana plant, which grew in abundance in the area. The 'Point' was later dropped. One of the Lyman businesses was the Lantana Fish Company where one hundred thousand-pound catches of fish were common. In the early 1900's the gathering and marketing of oysters became the leading industry. The Town of Lantana was incorporated in 1921 with twenty-two residents voting in the first election. At the time of incorporation, the area of Lantana was one square mile with a population of 100 residents. Today, the Town covers 2' sq. miles.
No history of Lantana would be complete without mention of the Barefoot Mailmen, who delivered mail from Palm Beach to Miami, on foot and by boat. The walking distance was a 66-mile route along the shore. According to a 1959 Miami Herald article by Theodore Pratt, it took three days for the mailmen to make the often dangerous trek. Lantana Town Manager Mike Bornstein has walked the route of the Barefoot Mailmen, and says it’s a daunting experience — but fun, at the same time. “You just get a sense for what it was like,” he said. The first school was built in 1894 at the east end of Lantana and Osborne roads, and moved by June 1903. After the 1928 hurricane, which blew the roof off the school, it was again moved in 1929 to where it stands today, on the property of the current Lantana Elementary School. The building now serves as a center for migrant workers and as a museum.
Lantana has several parks, including the John D. MacArthur Beach State Park, and the South County Regional Park, The Palm Beach Zoo is also nearby. Museums including the Flagler Museum, Schoolhouse Children's Museum and Schoolhouse Children's Museum display interesting collections of artifacts. The South Florida Science Museum houses a planetarium and also hosts laser shows. People may visit historical sites like Bonnet House and Stranahan House.

Miami has always been the commercial and cultural center for Florida and the nearby Caribbean, but in the past 30 years it has emerged as a world-class international hub and a gateway for all of Latin America. In many ways it serves as the central logistical and cultural hub of the entire Western Hemisphere. The inevitable result is a diverse and invigorating Latin culture superimposed upon what was already a major commercial, resort, and retirement area dating back to the 1920’s. Many think of it as a tourist center, but import/export and international financial trade with Latin countries make up a far larger part of the economy. These activities bring a large banking industry as well as cargo transport and warehousing; the manufacturing and corporate headquarters rosters are also growing. The city is busy- in many ways stressful- and the mix of cultures, heat, and poverty has occasionally boiled over into ethnic and civil strife. But the city is fun and undeniably alive.
